Introduction to Artificial Intelligence

The origins and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are a fascinating topic to explore. AI has been around for centuries, and the timeline of its invention and advancements range from the day it was first conceptualized to now when it’s reached a level of sophistication that no one would have dared dream of just decades ago. To better understand the scope and current state of AI, here is a detailed AI timeline that traces its inception right up until the present day.
It began in 1837 when Charles Babbage invented the Difference Engine, which was a mechanical calculator. Although not truly “intelligent” in any sense, this technological leap forward spurred further innovations until 1949 when Alan Turing published his famous paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence". This paper discussed his ideas on how to create an artificial system capable of exhibiting behavior considered to be intelligent. His work was influential in paving the way for all kinds of modern computing technologies.
The Turing Test eventually followed in 1950 as a measure used to determine whether a machine is thinking or not; if it passes the test, then it can be said to be functioning like a human brain with regards to thought processes. During this same period, researchers started developing algorithms for Machine Learning (ML), this is what helps give computers their ability to recognize patterns and complete tasks without being explicitly programmed how to do so. This gave rise to commercial applications like natural language processing (NLP), which are used by companies today for customer service automation and other tasks that require understanding of human language.

Pre-1950s AI Development

The Birth Of The Idea: In 1948, mathematician Claude Easley Shannon wrote a paper theorizing that machines could be made to think as humans do. His work paved the way for future AI researchers to develop ideas for mechanized intelligence.
The Turing Test: The Turing Test was proposed by Alan Turing in 1950 as a way of determining if a machine could demonstrate intelligent behavior. It involved having humans interacting with either another human or a machine through text based conversations. If judges couldn’t tell which was which, then the machine would be considered capable of exhibiting intelligent behavior.
John McCarthy: Later that year, John McCarthy coined the term “Artificial Intelligence” while attending Dartmouth College during an academic conference he convened on AI research. His research saw computers imitate basic cognitive tasks such as problem solving and logical reasoning. McCarthy later went on to develop the utilitarian programming language Lisp specifically designed for AI programming projects.
Logic Theorist: In 1956, Allen Newell and Herbert Simon developed Logic Theorist, one of the first Artificial Intelligence programs intended to carry out many high level abstract thinking tasks similar to those typically carried out by humans with complex problem solving skills using computers, rather than through trial and error processes by humans alone. 

1950s – 1970s Progress and Changes in AI

The 1950s marked the beginning of artificial intelligence (AI) development. One of the most important figures in the field was Alan Turing. He laid out the now famous Turing Test, which tests a machine's ability to exhibit human level intelligence. The development of computers during this time allowed for early AI researchers to make significant progress.
In 1956, John McCarthy coined the term ‘artificial intelligence’ and co-founded the Dartmouth Conference that same year; its attendees established the field as an academic discipline with research goals such as learning, reasoning, and problem solving. In 1958, Frank Rosenblatt created a neural network based machine called Perceptron which laid down groundwork for further advancements in machine learning.
The 1960s saw many developments in AI, predominantly in game playing machines. In 1961 IBM developed their first chess program, powered by rules rather than AI algorithms and techniques; however, it still required a lot of preprogrammed knowledge from scientists and engineers before being able to compete at a master level against humans. In 1966 John McCarthy created Lisp (List Processing), a computer language specifically designed for programming AI applications such as natural language processing and expert systems.
In 1969, Marvin Minsky founded MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory which led to numerous advances in robotics technology. During this time period there was also research done on symbolic reasoning systems such as MYCIN (used for medical diagnosis) and ELIZA (a chatterbot able to converse with humans).

1980s - 1990s Early Adaptive Technologies

In the 1980s, time sharing and expert systems were two of the most important AI advances. Timesharing is a method of dividing up computing resources to multiple users simultaneously so that each one can have their own exclusive access — an incredible feat for its time. Expert systems are based on a set of rules defined by experts on a particular domain or subject matter; these rule based systems were often used to solve complex problems in shorter amounts of time than ever before.
The 90s saw further progressions in AI technology with the introduction of rule based AI, neural networks, and deep learning. Rule Based AI automated actions based on established principles from experts, while neural networks modeled human neurons as artificial ones that could learn and create associations between data elements using weighted connections between nodes — something far more advanced than had ever been done before! Deep learning was also making its debut at this point in history, allowing computers to learn much more efficiently than ever by enabling them to process large amounts of data quickly and accurately over multiple layers.

2000 - 2010 Popularization of AI Techniques

In the early 2000s, researchers continued to make algorithmic improvements that allowed machines to solve complex problems more quickly and efficiently. This included advances in machine learning techniques, which enabled AI systems to become more accurate, precise, and successful over time. With these advancements came a new era of automation capabilities, allowing computers to automate certain tasks and processes to operate connected devices, tools, etc., with little to no human intervention.
By the mid 2000s, artificial neural networks (ANNs) developed rapidly thanks to its use of "neurons" , basic computer circuits that work together as well as its ability to recognize patterns and detect anomalies. Furthermore, ANNs allowed for more sophisticated decision making than ever before due its ability to offer a range of flexible input data options.
These developments sparked a debate between Symbolic AI, an approach that uses symbols and abstractions and Subsymbolic Approach, an approach that uses statistical methods and neural networks – as both tried to come up with improved algorithms for AIrelated tasks. In the end, however, subsymbolic approaches proved more successful due to their ability to process large amounts of data at unprecedented speeds and accuracy levels.

2011 – Present Recent Developments In AI Technology

Deep Learning: 

Deep Learning is the field of AI that focuses on using large scale data sets and advanced algorithms to improve computer performance. Through deep learning, computers are able to learn from large amounts of data and find patterns in it, allowing them to make decisions without being explicitly programmed for it. This has enabled machines to recognize images and speech with high accuracy, as well as process natural language conversations more effectively than ever before.

AI: Origins & Development

Although AI technology is relatively new, its roots trace all the way back to ancient Greece. In his work Metaphysics, Aristotle proposed that if machines could reason like humans, they could also think for themselves. Fast forwarding several centuries later, mathematician Alan Turing proposed a new concept called “machine learning” — which serves as one of the core concepts behind modern day AI computing — in 1950. From there, Google’s Deep Mind project demonstrated remarkable human-like performance on games like Go and Chess — marking one of the first instances of superhuman level machine intelligence.

During this era we saw significant progress with advancements such as IBM’s Deep Blue chess playing computer and MIT’s automated theorem prover system called Macsyma. By 1997, Deep Blue became famously known for being the first computer to defeat world champion Garry Kasparov at chess — proving that intelligent machines could indeed outperform humans in certain respects.
